In response to the last post, when I was on my two week observation I witnessed a great best practice: Song Friday.
Every Friday this English (but you could totally do this in Social Studies too, why not right?) teacher played a song for the class and then they looked at the lyrics on an overhead and had a discussion about it. I watched three of these classes and although the songs were totally different (Brighteyes, Joni Mitchell, and even Tom Waits!!!) each one incited a great discussion bringing in, in particular, some of the students that otherwise didn't really participate in the class.
If you have a more musical background you could probably whip out the sheet music or look at the melody in more depth as well.
Choosing a song from the historical period you are studying could help students relate to the cultural tone of that time (plus Jason Price is always saying you can find tons of that sheet music on line!)
Just a great idea that was not only effective but fun!
Happy Monday,
Justine
