Here's a short and sweet list of some great ideas we noted during our two week Observations at BC Secondary Schools.
Governance: Teachers who actually use positive reinforcement!! Who embrace organized chaos and encourage respect by letting everyone have a turn to speak/participate. Exciting!
Resources: A class decorated in Propaganda Posters. Engaging YouTube videos. Song Friday - every friday the class listened to a song and had a big discussion both generally about the song and specifically about the lyrics. Good songs too: Tom Waits, Brighteyes, Joni Mitchell.
Activities: A Stalin vs. Lenin seminar complete with a debate. Beginning each socials class with This Day in History. A/B partnering.
Our major worries: Burnt-out teachers. Textbook worship. Lessons that lack inspiration.
